Quick summary:

I have a motherboard with dual ethernet jacks and I wanted to connect my PS3 to the internet through my computer. I tried to bridge the two connections and now neither works. I deleted the network bridge and tried enabling/disabling both of them--still no luck. Trying to connect just my PC to the internet from XP didn't work either (the bridge was created/removed in Win7).

Any ideas? (this was posted from my laptop...)

Hmm, if XP won't work either than something might have been triggered by the network admins? I can't imagine anything keeping you from connecting from another operating system besides some kind of network block. Can you hook the laptop into the ethernet from the wall and get internet?

Oh, did XP work on the internet since you moved back in?

Good thought. I just plugged my laptop into the wall and it doesn't recognize the cable being there either. Is it possible to "disable" an ethernet jack remotely? I just sent an e-mail to our admins, so hopefully they can fix it for me.

I don't recall whether or not XP worked on the internet since I moved back in, but since my laptop can't get a connection I'm pretty sure it's not a problem on my end.

I'm not sure if they could necessarily block the ethernet jack itself (short of pulling it out of the cisco router). They could easily block your mac addresses but I don't think that is happening as the jack itself (or lack of internet access at the jack) seems to be the culprit.

I would be entirely amazed if the problem was coincidental... it literally happened right after I tried to bridge the connections.

I don't think I could have destroyed the ethernet jack by bridging a connection... Other people in the building still have internet access (including my roommate), so it looks like it's just me.

Sigh...

Hello Mike,

I suspect that we shut you off because your setup caused network
problems for the area.

Disconnect your systems from the network port and the block should clear
by tomorrow morning.

If you are still blocked tomorrow send us the Mac/physical addresses of
your PC.

Even that doesn't quite make sense though, cause my laptop and desktop surely have different MAC addresses.

turning on internet connection sharing in a DHCP environment can wreak havoc. Other computers on your subnet will try and fail to use you as an internet gateway. go to walmart and buy a cheap router or switch.

I've got a router with me, but I figured it would be less cables and whatnot if I could just bridge the PS3 through my computer. Guess that won't be working...

Yeah you can turn off interfaces without unplugging it. You might have triggered a portsecurty block on the Ciscos and that will deny you until the end of time unless they reset the learned mac addresses on that switch (fat chance). It most likely just did a "shut" on that interface after so many blocks. Most likely it was an auto shutdown showing as a security violation. I had this happen on a failover firewall the other day.

Briding isn't the same technology as NLB or ICS. In order to combine two nics together for performance you need NLB - network load balancing. (Which is not what you want to do) You just want to enable ICS and share one nic through the other. You need windows firewall and ICS services enabled and started. Right click the nic you want to share, and go down to properties, go to the sharing tab and say allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection. Then select your other NIC that you want it to be shared through. Make sure both are set to DHCP b/c it will turn your one nic into a 192.168.1.2 and automatically select the other as a gateway for it.

Thats what I used to use is ICS from my laptop to share my 3G aircard to my home computer to play games on. Worked great. The only problem was the MTU couldn't get up to 1500 so some of the Xbox live things didn't work.

Thanks for the info, Todd. I just hooked up my router for the time being... I don't want to get blocked again. :p
